Highly decorative vintage clock and aneroid barometer combination housed in an elaborate bronze-tone metal case.
The piece features two large circular instruments: an ornate mechanical-style clock with raised Arabic numerals and a traditional barometer marked with French weather indications including “Pluie,” “Variable” and “Beau.”
The elaborate sculptural case incorporates an anchor and rope motif, richly modelled foliage, animal heads, ornamental urns and other classical decorative elements. The substantial design gives the piece the appearance of an elaborate 19th-century European decorative instrument.
The rear is fitted with two separate circular metal housings corresponding to the clock and barometer mechanisms.
The metal has developed an attractive aged bronze appearance with visible patina and wear consistent with age and use.
An unusual and highly decorative statement piece suitable for an antique interior, office, library, maritime-themed collection or period display.
Condition: Vintage condition with age-related wear, patina and surface marks. Functionality of the clock and barometer should be described as untested unless confirmed before sale.
Style: French / Continental European revival style
Estimated period: Most likely 20th century vintage rather than a confirmed 19th-century antique
Material: Cast metal with bronze/brass-tone finish
Instruments: Clock + aneroid barometer
Decoration: Anchor, rope, foliage, urns and sculptural animal motifs
Important attribution note
I would not advertise this as solid bronze or as a 19th-century antique based on these photographs alone.
The rear construction, finish and casting make me lean toward a later decorative cast-metal reproduction/revival piece, probably mid-to-later 20th century. That does not make it unattractive, but it changes the valuation substantially compared with a genuine 19th-century French bronze instrument.
